After a large long-term care pharmacy in Anchorage, Alaska unexpectedly announced its closure earlier this year, patients across the state were left unsure of where they could get the medications they needed.
Genoa Healthcare pharmacist Yunga Vercelline, RPh made it her mission to keep impacted people on their treatment. In two months, she and her pharmacy team grew in size to begin serving over 1,000 new consumers.
To do this was no easy task. Beyond increasing the size of their staff, the team collaborated with the state to ensure Genoa’s Washington-based pharmacists and pharmacy technicians could practice in Alaska and provide them back up. Yunga also partnered with leaders of Alaska Behavioral Health, the clinic where her pharmacy is located, to expand Genoa’s pharmacy space so they had enough room to stock and fill medication for their new consumers.
“When there’s a crisis, the community comes together and does what needs to be done to help each other out,” said Yunga. “And I think that’s what we did.”
